Carnival traditions
By following the Montée des Pierrots, we reach a road that traces the path of the town’s 17th century fortifications.
After the Second World War, in an effort to boost the local economy, several neighbourhoods in Arlon started their own folk dance groups and organised a street parade, held midway through Lent. This marked the beginnings of famous groups such as the Pierrots de la rue de Diekirch, the Feux-Follets du Haut de la Ville (both formed 1950), Lisa et Jempi (the “Giants”, formed 1951) —who accompanied the Hellechtsman (1935)—and Les Pointus de la Spetz (formed 1957). Les Fidèles Arlonais des Faubourgs joined the parade in 2003 and the Sangliers (“Wild Boars”) in 2012. After the two towns were merged in 1977, other village groups came to the fore to take part in this festive tradition.
