The Montée Royale (Royal Ascent)
Built in the 17th century by a Spanish engineer, the Montée Royale was originally composed of seven platforms separated by three steps. Each platform had its own tree and station of the cross. The Montée had to be rebuilt following the occupation by Louis XIV and his troops. The “royal path of the cross” had 9 stations at the time. In 1830, the stairs collapsed, and a new Montée was built, supported by arcades and made up of multiple terraces. The new path of the cross (1846) had a total of 14 stations. In 1851, it collapsed again and was repaired shortly after. With its 14 identical stone crosses, the Montée Royale has been a listed monument since 1992.
